For most dog owners training classes provide the optimum environment for training and so Training your canine companion is one of the best things you can do for your pet. Not only does it help you and your pet bridge the dog-human communication gap, but it will ensure that you are spending time building a positive and permanent relationship with your dog. Positive reinforcement focused training is important for several reasons: - Training creates an effective and understandable communication system with your dog.
- Training sets expectations and standards that both you and your dog can live with.
- Training builds your dog’s confidence and sharpens his decision-making skills (yours too!).
- Training can help prevent behavior problems from developing.
- Training can reinforce the relationship balance among everyone in the dog’s home group.
- Training creates a win-win situation. Your dog wins by earning the good things in life. You win by having a well-behaved and stable dog.
Purrfect Paws recommends that you do your homework before choosing a trainer to coach you and your dog through your training sessions. Not all trainers are created equal. Make sure that you choose a trainer or training facility that has both current and continuing educational (learning theory, behavioral sciences) and training experience. We recommend a training philosophy that encourages positive reinforcement and working as a team with your dog. We firmly believe that no individual should have to learn through force-based or pain-inducing methods. CPDTs (Certified Pet Dog Trainer) has passed a test from an independent testing board not affiliated with any training school or organization. CPDTs have passed this test indicating that they have sufficient knowledge in ethology, equipment, instruction skills, learning theory and animal husbandry. They also must meet hourly minimums for instruction and assisting. References are required from colleagues, veterinarians and clients prior to being approved to take the test. Miranda K. Workman has been a CPDT since November 2004. Tracie is currently finishing her instruction hour requirement prior to taking the exam in the Fall 2007. To find a CPDT in your area go to the Certification Council for Pet Dog Trainers. We are also a member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) which is an organization focused on providing educational opportunities for individuals interested in dog training.
